The Magnificent Seven is getting a brand-new adaptation in the form of a TV series, and it's setting itself apart from the previous versions with some major new female characters who have just been announced.

Deadline has confirmed that Downton Abbey and MobLand star Joanne Froggatt and The Gilded Age's Amy Forsyth have both joined the MGM+ series, with information about who they're playing.

If you've never seen any of the previous versions, the plot follows a group of seven gunslingers from different walks of life, who come together to defend a small town from an impending attack.

Froggatt will be playing brand-new character Harriet Talbot, a woman who has been through a lot of pain and heartache in her life.

Born into poverty, Harriet married a wealthy landowner who turned out to be abusive. She escaped, but the community that took her in demanded she give up her baby.

She later found a home with the Quakers, but mere minutes after her second marriage ceremony her husband is murdered. This time around, she decides to take action, which is where she crosses paths with the Seven.

Meanwhile, Forsyth will play Katie 'Deadeye' Dalton, a woman who previously used her skills with a gun for a travelling Wild West show.

However, her life was turned upside down when her family are murdered. She turned to drink to numb the pain, but while under the influence she accidentally shot and killed her co-star on stage, witnessed by the entire audience.

Described as "wry, sarcastic, and emotionally guarded", Katie knows Seven member Vin Tanner (played by Michael Ealy) through a brief yet "vivid" fling.

The plot of this version, set in the 1880s, will see the Seven come together to defend the Quaker village, with the series' central theme being whether violence is an acceptable way to defend people who base their entire belief system around anti-violence.

The Magnificent Seven series will come to MGM+.
