Peter Sarsgaard has officially joined the cast of HBO's post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us. According to Deadline, the actor will be appearing in a recurring role in the upcoming third season, where he will be playing a brand new character.
Sarsgaard will star as Amon, one of the leaders of The Seraphites, who is not in the original Naughty Dog video game. However, fans will have to wait to see him in action, as the show has begun a mid-shoot hiatus due to the FIFA World Cup.
The Last of Us films in Vancouver, Canada, one of the cities where the huge football event takes place. As such, production on the show has been halted for approximately a month, and will continue until the end of the year.

Season 3 is expected to premiere next year and will probably serve as the final chapter in the drama series. Though there are currently few details regarding the plot, the story is expected to centre on Abby Anderson, with The Seraphites playing a major part in her journey.
Last year, the show's co-creator Neil Druckmann, who also created the game, announced his decision to step down as co-showrunner in order to focus on other Naughty Dog projects.

Druckmann will continue in his role as an executive producer but co-creator Craig Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner for season 3.
"I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO," Druckmann said in a statement shared on Instagram.

"Co-creating the show has been a career highlight. It's been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct and write on the last two seasons."
He added: "I'm deeply thankful of the thoughtful approach and dedication the talented cast and crew took to adapting The Last of Us Part I and their continued adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. I look forward to HBO and PlayStation Productions continuing Ellie and Abby's story next season."
The Last of Us airs on Sky Atlantic and streaming services NOW and HBO Max in the UK. The show airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max in the US.
