Apple TV+'s sci-fi series Foundation is returning to our screens with a third instalment streaming this summer.

Starring British actor Jared Harris (Mad Men) alongside Lee Pace and Lou Llobell, the show is a loose adaptation of the Foundation stories by Isaac Asimov.

Season three, first announced in December 2023, will hit the streamer on 11 July. The new episodes will air weekly throughout the summer, with the season finale becoming available on 12 September.

As teased in the first-look clip at the new season, chapter three will kick off with a time jump.

152 years after the events of the previous seasons, Foundation season 3 spells war after the shocking finale seeing Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) dying despite Gaal Dornick (Llobell) having had a different vision of the future.

Llobell is reprising her role as Gaal, with Pace also rocking a new look as Brother Day and Harris predicting war as mathematician Hari, the founder of "psychohistory".

"War is upon us," the character says in the clip. "And at the centre of it is The Mule. He will destroy everything."

On the upcoming season, the villain is played by Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbæk, who replaced Sex Education's Mikael Persbrandt.

Alongside Asbæk, new cast members include Cherry Jones, Brandon P Bell and Troy Kotsur.

The synopsis for season 3 delves into the evil plans of The Mule, who's determined to control the universe with any means in his possession.

"The Foundation has become increasingly established far beyond its humble beginnings while the Cleonic Dynasty's Empire has dwindled," the logline reads.

"As both of these galactic powers forge an uneasy alliance, a threat to the entire galaxy appears in the fearsome form of a warlord known as The Mule whose sights are set on ruling the universe by use of physical and military force, as well as mind control.

"It's anyone's guess who will win, who will lose, who will live, and who will die as Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick, the Cleons, and Demerzel play a potentially deadly game of intergalactic chess."

Foundation season 3 premieres on 11 July on Apple TV+. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on the platform now.
