Sarah Michelle Gellar has opened up about the "overwhelming" pressures of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

Earlier this month, it emerged that a sequel series to the iconic vampire show was in the works and nearing a pilot order, with Gellar later confirming her involvement.

The star has now detailed her nerves ahead of working on the show, admitting to People: "I wish there was a better word than 'overwhelming'."

Gellar added that it was "heartwarming and exciting" but also "incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time", notably "because you have to do it right".

"And I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloé Zhao to the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], to Gail Berman," she added. "And I think people are going to be pretty impressed."

The new series will reportedly focus on a new Slayer, with Gellar's character Buffy returning in a recurring capacity. Eternals' Zhao will direct and the Zuckermans will write.

Opening up about her initial meeting with Zhao that convinced her to return, Gellar wrote on Instagram earlier in February: "I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told [producer] Gail [Berman] that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again.

"We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us."

Gellar said that revisiting the show "was not something [she] could do unless [she] was sure we would get it right".

"This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet," she continued. "I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer can be streamed in full on Disney+.
