Buffy the Vampire Slayer star James Marsters has finally broken his silence on the hit show's upcoming revival.

It was confirmed earlier this month that the beloved series, which originally aired from 1997 to 2003, will return to screens with Sarah Michelle Gellar back in the iconic role of Buffy Summers.

Marsters, who played British punk vampire Spike on the original series, has now broken his silence on the news, though made it clear he couldn't say too much "in the best interest of having the project be the best it can be".

"So first of all I think I'm just going to get the elephant in the room out of the way, which is that it's not a good thing for me to talk about the Buffy reboot," he shared in a video posted to his Instagram page.

"I'm sorry if you were coming here hoping for some news. But in the interest of having the project be the best it can be, it's best that I keep my mouth shut right now, so I'm going to do that."

While he didn't confirm whether he'll be making an appearance in the revival, Marsters did share his excitement.

"I think I'm like everybody, I'm very excited that we're going to learn more about the journey of Buffy Summers and how she saves the world because I think the world needs it," he said. "So I'm going to do my part by doing nothing."

Gellar, who will appear in the revival as a recurring part rather than series lead, shared an emotional statement last week, saying that a show return would be for "all the fans".

"I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right," she said.

"This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer can be streamed in full on Disney+.
