Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot New Sunnydale is no longer moving ahead, as the network Hulu has decided to drop the project.

The Buffy Summers actor, who was serving as executive producer alongside director Chloé Zhao, revealed the news in an Instagram post.

Addressing the camera, she said: "So, I am really sad to have to share this but I wanted you all to hear it from me."

"Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale", she explained.

"I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish, yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloe I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. And this doesn't change any of that.

Fans were devastated, criticising the decision in the comments and asking Hulu to reverse the cancellation or for another streamer like Netflix to pick it up. Even Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Kathryn Newton commented with a heartbreak emoji.

The reboot was set to feature Buffy alongside a new Slayer named Nova, played by Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

Chase Sui Wonders, who starred alongside Gellar in the I Know What You Did Last Summer revival movie, was also cast in a small role.

No other original cast members were confirmed for the reboot, with Charisma Carpenter revealing that she hadn't been contacted to return as Cordelia Chase (although Cordelia was killed off in the spin-off Angel).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was set to stream on Hulu in the US, which is part of Disney+ in the UK. All seasons of the original show can be streamed on Disney+ and ITVX in the UK, and on Hulu in the US.
