Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared the secret to her marriage with Freddie Prinze Jr, saying hard “work” was the key.

The pair have been together since 2000 after working on films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scooby-Doo, with the couple tying the knot two years later in 2002.

Over two decades later, the duo are still happily married, with Gellar telling Fox News Digital (via BANG Premier) that their relationship was still flourishing after putting in “work” over the years.

“I think everything takes work in you, whether it's a friendship or a work relationship or a marriage,” Gellar said. “You have to put the work in. And we live in an extremely disposable society now. Your phone breaks, you don't fix it. You get a new one. I think that's a lot of the attitude toward relationships.”

Prinze Jr, who played Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, had previously spoken about his marriage to Gellar back in 2022, sharing that three things – cooking, laughing and cleaning – helped their relationship.

“I do the dishes while I'm cooking so there's less shit to look at. can't stand a mess: my room is spotless, my car is spotless. I'm one day late for a haircut and I'm going crazy,” added the star, who has also appeared in Star Wars Rebels.

While the pair are still happy in their relationship, Gellar has made a steady return to acting in recent years after a small hiatus, with the star recently appearing as Tanya Martin in Dexter: Original Sin.
