The eighth entry in the Scream franchise has gotten an exciting update, with the horror film reportedly landing a pair of screenwriters following the commercial success of Scream 7 earlier this year.

After the slasher film grossed over $209 million at the box office, it was reported that producers were looking to fast-track a follow-up, with series creator Kevin Williamson also expressing hope that an eighth film in the series would come.

It seems he has his wish, as Deadline has reported that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman have been hired to pen the screenplay. The pair serve as the showrunners for Rian Johnson's Poker Face, and have also written episodes for Suits and Fringe.

The eighth Scream movie doesn't currently have a director attached, and it's unknown which stars will return. Scream 7 saw several famous faces reprise their roles from previous instalments, including Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard.

While specific plot details are yet to be disclosed, Williamson, who directed and co-wrote Scream 7, confirmed to Variety that they had a "lot of ideas" regarding the future direction of the long-running series.

"If this film is successful and there’s an audience for it, you know we’ll make it because, [firstly], I think the studio would like to make it," he said. "[Secondly], the people who make these movies would love to make it because they’re a blast to make and so much fun."

While Williamson was optimistic, Courteney Cox intimated that she wouldn't be reprising her role as Gale Weathers, saying: "I think everyone should want to do another Scream. It’s fun and it’s great. I don’t think I can make the next one, but we’ll see."

The Zuckermans also wrote the script for the pilot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, which was conceived as a continuation of the classic series. Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to reprise her iconic role, while Ryan Kiera Armstrong was also cast.

Despite having Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao on board as a director and several stars scheduled to return, the pilot was cancelled by Hulu last month as Gellar confirmed the news via social media.

Scream 8 has no release date.
