The 100 showrunner Jason Rothenberg has revealed why the new planet in season six is so dangerous.
The CW recently dropped a first-look trailer of the sixth season, introducing viewers to Sanctum, the new world that Monty (Christopher Larkin) introduced Clarke (Eliza Taylor) and Bellamy (Bob Morley) to in the closing scenes of the season five finale.
Sanctum seemed to be a paradise at first, but the trailer then revealed that the planet's inhabitants are affected by an "eclipse-induced psychosis", making the new world just as dangerous as the one the characters had left behind.
Speaking to Digital Spy and other outlets at WonderCon, Rothenberg provided some more detail on the mysterious planet, and why humans were never meant to live there.
"Eliguis III landed on Sanctum 236 years ago and thought they'd found paradise. And then, within day 21, when the first eclipse happened, bad things resulted," he said.
"People were never supposed to be on Sanctum... because of the lifecycle of the planet, which is... every time those planets come into alignment, an eclipse induced psychosis happens."

Rothenberg also went as far as explaining what happened to the indigenous creatures on the planet, and how it became overrun by plant life.
"The insects and the lower levels species... really that's as far as evolution probably would have gotten on this planet, because they wipe each other out almost to extinction every time this happens [the planets align], and the plants feed on the dead and eventually it's a plant dominated moon.
"That's probably a spoiler, but whatever," he laughed.
The 100 season 6 premieres on The CW in the US on Tuesday, April 30. E4 airs the show in the UK.
