The Chase star Anne Hegerty has given an update on the show's future after it was put on ice by ITV. Earlier this year, it was reported that no new episodes of the quiz show would be filmed for at least a year, leaving fans disappointed.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Hegerty confirmed that The Chase was on hold for a year but promised fans they'd have plenty of content to keep them going.

"The Chase is only being frozen for a year, and there is a tonne of other stuff we are doing," she explained.

"We have just done The Chase Around the World. The Chase daytime will absolutely be back. We have tonnes of new shows in the can. We will not have to show any more repeats like we used to have."

The pro quizzer went on to say that the show "worked us into the ground" with its filming schedule, revealing that she "barely had a break" from last September until May and lost count of how many episodes she did.

On the plus side, Hegerty has seen her personal prize pot grow. Revealing that The Chasers get paid per show, she shared with DS: "I made about £100,000 more last year than I normally do." (Speaking about the show's overall success, Hegerty claimed that The Chase brings in "about £100m a year from all the franchises".)

Even with the packed shooting schedule, Hegerty says The Chase host Bradley Walsh still enjoys doing the show and has always made time for it among his other commitments over the years – including presenting several TV shows and starring as Graham O'Brien on Doctor Who.

"He loves [work]," she said. "He just really enjoys himself.

"Bradley is always on the television. Filming of The Chase has not really changed. He has always been so busy, ever since he got the job on Doctor Who. We have always had to fit it in."

Hegerty continued: "As far as I can tell, he still loves doing The Chase. That is our one great fear, that he is not going to want to do it, but he seems to love it."

As for Hegerty's next move, she told DS that she's "off to do The Chase in Australia in about five weeks" – and would sign on for the New Zealand version of the show as well.

"I know that New Zealand want to do another series, so it is a case if I could do that. I did the pilot series, and it went down well," she said. "I will take the New Zealand job if they offer it."

One project Hegerty isn't interested in is Strictly, explaining: "My agent wanted me to do Strictly several years ago, but I can't dance. You have no idea to the extent I can't dance... I would be the comedy person who gets shot out of the cannon or something."

The Chase fans may never see Hegerty on the dance floor, but they can catch more of the franchise soon, when The Chase Around the World debuts later this month.

The Chase Around the World premieres Thursday 16 July at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
