The BBC has said that Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans is "taking time off" from his Radio Wales Breakfast Show.

The news comes after the opera singer apologised for making an "inappropriate and unacceptable" comment during the Strictly Live Tour launch in Birmingham, which was recorded by The Mail on Sunday.

Following the controversy, BBC Wales confirmed Evans' temporary departure from the Radio Wales Breakfast Show, though didn't clarify a reason for the break or when he will return.

He will continue to take part in the Strictly Live Tour, a spokesperson for the live tour confirmed.

Addressing the incident earlier this week, Evans told BBC News: "My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise."

A spokesperson for the Strictly Live Tour and BBC Studios also commented at the time, saying: "We have made it very clear to Wynne that we do not tolerate such behaviour on the tour. We were not previously aware of the remark and did not receive any complaints."

Evans was at the centre of controversy last year when his Strictly pro partner Katya Jones appeared to remove his hand from her waist during a live show.

However, the pair later clarified they were "just messing around", with Jones also saying she didn't feel "uncomfortable" or "offended".

Evans further addressed the controversy on his Radio Wales Breakfast Show, saying: "Basically, I'm absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the past day.

"It's not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close. We're really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke. It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK?"

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
