The Traitors is a show that can bring us all together. Whether getting lost in a constant stream of head-turning Linda memes, collectively backing Minah as one of the best cloak-wearers the show has ever seen, or all coming to the simultaneous realisation that Alexander is actually a reality television icon for the ages – the BBC format has its way of entering the public consciousness.

But there's something much less joyful that's come to light by way of die-hard Faithful Anna, whose time in the castle was up after she refused to join the Traitors in their turret. She was one of the biggest characters for a time, convinced that the traitors were out to get her as she survived a recruitment attempt and the dreaded Death Match.

But her outfits (yes, really) seem to be provoking conversation – for better, and for worse.

We're here for a colourful queen, and there's plenty of praise to be found for her wardrobe selections. Many viewers have suggested that her retro-inspired designs are "ABBA-coded" – a compliment of the highest order, to be honest – and others have likened her to throwback legend (and a staple of most '90s kids' bedrooms) Groovy Chick.

But while sharing some of her wardrobe on her social media account, Anna has also called out a specific type of response.

What to Read Next

"Me on my way to trigger more men with my brightly coloured traitors outfits...," she captioned one of her videos (via Metro).

While infuriating, it's sadly not entirely surprising that Anna's appearance is being picked at in this way. This mirrors the IRL experience that many women face – particularly if they aren't subscribing to the male gaze.

It's just one way in which women can be scrutinised – whether they're too confident, too loud, too sexualised (we really can't win) – and this phenomenon has circled other reality shows in many different guises.

When it comes to appearance, this is particularly prevalent in shows that could be seen as, shall we say, a little more superficial by design. Whether fair or not, dating shows like Love Island have appearance baked into their very formats – something show bosses have even underlined.

It's made the show something of an echo chamber, reinforcing some of the more frustrating norms we experience day to day.

The Traitors, as a gameshow, is an entirely different concept. It's been praised for the way it casts more relatable people reflective of folk we might bump into at Tesco's, and of course the strategy-based format is more about the mind than anything else.

This new discourse being directed at Anna clearly shows that society's attitude towards women, particularly when it comes to how we look, can seep into everything.

It feels impossible to talk about this without acknowledging the times we are living in. Toxic masculinity and misogynistic content is on the rise, to the point where police chiefs in the UK have warned of a "national emergency" with young boys and men being influenced into extreme misogyny online (via BBC News).

While it might seem bold to connect the two on the surface, the trend could be said to form a tiny piece of a very large puzzle.

In response to a comment that addressed some of the "men hating" on her clothing choices, Anna replied: "GOD FORBID I'm dressing for myself and not to impress them..."

It's hard to imagine anyone focusing so much on what Doctor Kas was wearing when he announced he was, of course, a Faithful, or what Linda-hunter Jake had been sporting when he was proven right in front of the rest of the group.

Attention doesn't have to be negative, of course, and as we noted Anna's seen a lot of celebration too.

But from Anna's own comments it seems that she's also been on the receiving end of a particular brand of unwanted male attention, and there lies the problem.

It would be great if men could stop making unsolicited comments about women, or feeling entitled to point out that something isn't quite to their liking.

Odds are, we don't care.

The Traitors season 3 is airing Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Another season and a celebrity spin-off have already been confirmed, while international versions also stream on iPlayer.
