Strictly Come Dancing star Pete Wicks has spoken about his latest project, saying it is full of “heartbreak and happiness”.

The reality star, who reached the semi-finals of the BBC show last year alongside Jowita Przystal, is collaborating with Dogs Trust in Basildon on For Dogs’ Sake, a new series in which he “rescues and rehabilitates” vulnerable dogs.

During the latest episode of the Staying Relevant podcast, which he hosts alongside Sam Thompson, Wicks previewed the U&W docuseries prior to its launch on Tuesday (January 7), sharing that it proved to be an emotional journey.

“[It’s] very exciting – I spent four years trying to do this,” shared Wicks, with the clip being shared on the podcast’s Instagram account. “It’s an absolute passion project. Can't wait. Please, everyone watch it."

He added: “It’s a wonderful show, full of heartbreak but full of happiness. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions with some wonderful dogs and people. And unfortunately… me. I would like it to do well so we can go back and film some more and give a little voice to the voiceless.”

Wicks, who has also appeared on The Only Way is Essex and Celebs Go Dating, had previously spoken about the project, sharing with the Radio Times: “It might sound harsh, but it's true – I prefer dogs to people. I don't think you realise how much dogs will change things until you have one.

“Filming the series was a privilege, but also emotionally difficult. I don't mind saying that. I cried several times. It's heartbreaking when you witness a dog arrive after a bad start in life, you can see the sadness in their eyes.”

“It's a series I've been desperate to do for a decade. Why? Well, it's estimated that there are around 100,000 dogs in UK rescue centres. But only one in five people who get a dog, get a rescue,” he added.
