We knew Ludwig series two was coming, but we've had to wait almost a year for any updates to everybody's new favourite cosy crime show.

Big Talk Studios has now confirmed that filming is under way on the new series of the hit murder mystery, starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin.

They're both returning, of course, as John 'Ludwig' Taylor and his sister-in-law Lucy, and they're joined by new cast members Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton.

Bonnar and Clifford are reuniting after starring together in Fleabag, and here they're playing newspaper editor Gareth Fisher and local MP Joanne Kemper, respectively, while Ashenden is DC Ethan Cole and Sutton is DC Caitlin Sullivan.

Ludwig series two will also bring back Dipo Ola (DCI Russell Carter), Dylan Hughes (Henry Betts-Taylor), Dorothy Atkinson (DCS Carol Shaw), Ralph Ineson (Chief Constable Ziegler) and Karl Pilkington (DI Matt Neville).

What to Read Next

After the events of the first series, John now no longer needs to pretend to be his identical twin brother James, who is still missing.

John is now an official Crime Scene Consultant, working on 'impossible' crimes, but he has been forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or to work out what exactly James was investigating when he disappeared.

Of course, that won't stop John and Lucy from trying to solve the mystery of what happened to James, so while John might no longer be pretending to be James, he's still leading a double life.

The second series has again been written by series creator Mark Brotherhood, with George Kane directing the first three episodes and Stella Corradi directing the final three episodes.

The first series of Ludwig was the BBC's biggest scripted show of 2024 and the biggest launch for a comedy since 2018, with more than 9.5 million viewers tuning in for the first episode.

Earlier this year, Mitchell reflected on the incredible success of the first series, saying he'd never done anything that "resonated with an audience so quickly".

"I've done things that I'm really proud of, but it felt like what TV must have been like in the 1980s: it was on and a week later everyone knew about it," he continued.

"It's really well written, there's an appetite for that type of programme. I think the BBC supported it very well, put it on at a time of year that people were really up for that show. Hopefully it was a good version of that kind of show."

Ludwig series one is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. Series two does not yet have a release date.
