Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been confirmed to be fronting a brand-new BBC documentary special about "the crisis he believes is facing young men and boys".

Gareth Southgate: Changing the Game will air on BBC One on Monday, 8 June, and will see him travel across the UK to find out why the generation feels lost and what can be done about it.

He'll speak to boys falling behind in school, men struggling to find work, people without father figures, and even inmates who felt like they had no choice but to turn to crime.

Southgate said the documentary isn't just about the why and that it aims to explore how things can be improved for young men in Britain today.

"This is the next step in my purpose to get young men and boys moving in the right direction rather than falling behind," he said.

What to Read Next

"I wanted them to speak openly and without judgement about what's really going on in their lives. Through these conversations, I've gained a better understanding of the challenges they face.

"It's been a fascinating experience, and I am so grateful to everyone I met who were brave enough to share their stories. I hope this documentary will go some way towards changing the national conversation and encourage us all to support them in realising their potential."

"Gareth Southgate is in a unique position to explore why so many boys feel like they're falling behind and to think differently about what might help", said BBC commissioning editor Gian Quaglieni.

"This film steps away from polarised arguments and instead listens to how young people really feel and what they're dealing with. These are important conversations - and not always easy - but they need to be heard."

Meanwhile, a BBC drama focusing on Southgate's time as England manager between 2016 and 2024, titled Dear England and starring Joseph Fiennes and Jodie Whittaker, premiered the other day and is now available to stream.

The hour-long Gareth Southgate: Changing the Game will air on BBC One on Monday, 8 June. It will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
