Unforgotten's seventh series has just taken a step forward, with ITV announcing that filming has begun. The beloved crime drama, which is led by Sanjeev Bhaskar (DI Sunny Khan) and Sinéad Keenan (DCI Jess James), will be back and see the returning characters investigate "a complex and emotionally charged cold case" – so, more of what viewers and fans love.

There's set to be an introduction to a new cast of characters, and it's been teased that their "present-day lives conceal dark secrets". Sophie Rundle – who also fronts After the Flood, which just launched its second season on the platform – will be playing a troubled social worker, while other new cast members include Kirsty J Curtis (Joan), Julian Rhind-Tutt (Green Wing) and Natalie Simpson.

Created and written by award-winning screenwriter Chris Lang (who also brought us I, Jack Wright and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe), Unforgotten has become one of ITV's best-performing dramas, standing out as the third most-streamed drama in ITVX history. Season six was the "biggest returning drama of 2025 across all channels and streaming platforms", according to ITV, launching to an impressive audience of 9.2 million viewers (averaging 8.5 million across its run).

Huw Kennair-Jones, ITV's Drama Commissioner, has said: "It's always beyond exciting to return to the brilliant world of Unforgotten and this series promises to be no different.

"Once again, Chris Lang has created a compelling set of characters interwoven in an intriguing and enticing story, one that will keep Jess and Sunny and the audience guessing until the very end."

Sinéad Keenan – who is also one of the leads in Netflix's highly-anticipated new show from Derry Girls' creator Lisa McGee, coming to our screens soon – took over as Unforgotten's co-lead after Nicola Walker's exit in 2021.

Walker's character DCI Cassie Stuart's fate played out in the tragic series four finale, with Keenan's new DCI filling those shoes in the series five premiere.

Unforgotten series 1-6 is available to watch on ITVX, and series 7 is coming soon.
