Shetland's future beyond its explosive season 10 finale has been confirmed by the BBC. At the end of last night's episode, it was confirmed in a voiceover that Shetland would return for an 11th season.

In a post on X, BBC Scotland Comms wrote: "It's official, #Shetland will return in 2026!"

The final episode of season 10 saw DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and DI Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell) discover who killed Eadie Tulloch.

The former social worker was found dead outside of her home, presumably due to a tragic accident at first, but the officers saw suspicious signs on her body that prompted them to investigate her personal life.

The season 10 finale revealed that it was Arthur Mair (Clive Russell) who had killed her after weeks of speculation, and not prime suspect Ed Tulloch (Stuart Townsend), her estranged son.

Meanwhile, Billy's future on the show is uncertain, with the police sergeant facing an investigation after he covered up evidence for his former partner Robert.

Fans took to social media to share their thoughts, with one X user writing: "Well, that was an exciting and twisty finale as I knew it would be - a perfect end to what has been one of the best seasons of #Shetland on my opinion.

"I can’t wait for season 11 and to find out what happens with Billy… 😬😬😬."

Another added: "#Shetland is absurd in many ways but also great, gentle telly. But I have one key complaint: Sandy needs a promotion from DC."

"I’ve struggled so much with my ability to focus on even basic things like TV recently but that had my full attention & was brilliant! I hope that’s not the last we see of Billy though. 💔"
