An Australian crime drama that serves as a follow-up to a beloved '90s series has found itself a new streaming home in the UK.

Halifax: Retribution is a eight-part series which sees a former forensic psychiatrist return back to the field in order to help the police track down a serial killer sniper who is on the loose in Melbourne.

Originally airing in 2020, it saw Rebecca Gibney reprise her the role of Dr Jane Halifax from the show Halifax f.p.

That show ran from 1994 to 2002, although it was in the format of 21 feature-length TV movies rather than weekly episodes (which the 2020 series adopted). It featured early roles for Hugh Jackman, Hugo Weaving and Richard Roxburgh, among other household Aussie names.

Halifax: Retribution has recently been added to Prime Video, joining the original Halifax f.p.

What to Read Next

When Halifax: Retribution debuted, 18 years after the original wrapped up, reviews from critics and fans was mixed with a positive slant.

The Guardian wrote that "Rebecca Gibney [is] a force of nature" but the show was an "occasionally patchy return", while Stuff called it "certainly not without its charms", but overall more of a "throwback to the start of the century, rather than something vibrant, resonant and memorable".

On IMDb, the show has an average user score of 6.9/10, with a common complaint that the music and editing often resembles a music video, to its detriment.

Those who liked the show called it "excellent thriller that was good to watch" that had them "hooked from the first episode".

"This series is wonderfully shot, with frequent use of aerial cinematography to amplify the scale of the situation that sends Melbourne quaking in its boots and highlight the beauty of the city," reads one review, that also praised Gibney and co-star Claudia Karvan for their performances.

Halifax f.p. and Halifax: Retribution are available to stream with a Prime Video subscription now.
