The Gathering, Channel 4's mystery thriller series, has been added to Netflix's 'worth the wait' section.

Expected to land on the streamer on 25 August, the critically acclaimed drama hails from World Productions, the company behind BBC hit Line of Duty, as well as Sky Atlantic's Save Me.

According to an official synopsis, "The Gathering centres around a violent attack on a teenage girl during a rave on a tidal islet. Set on Merseyside, the drama focuses on a group of teens from disparate backgrounds, each of whom could have committed the crime, along with their parents, who give equal cause for suspicion."

Sadie Soverall and Eva Morgan lead the cast as gymnastics rivals Jessica and Kelly, while Vinette Robinson, Warren Brown, Richard Coyle, and Sonny Walker appear in supporting roles.

While The Gathering received low live viewership numbers and was later cancelled, season one was well-received by critics.

"The mostly local cast give naturalistic performances in authentic Scouse accents, led by Morgan, who graduated from drama school only a year ago but is a real find," wrote The Telegraph.

"The plotting is wayward, and the denouement feels forced. What's impressive is the socio-emotional interplay between the young cast, the sense of real, raw lives being lived," noted the Observer.

Meanwhile, Irish Examiner raved: "It’s a watchable, gritty drama," adding: "The details are superb. Liverpool makes for a compelling back-drop, showing the rough and the smooth. The casting is tight so you believe these people and understand their motives."

Following the show's cancellation, executive producer Simon Heath told The Sun that while it "performed very well" for Channel 4, the broadcaster had "new people in charge and new priorities", which meant that a second season was off the cards.

"We're very proud of The Gathering and everything it has achieved," a Channel 4 spokeswoman shared with Deadline. "The series championed regional voices both on and off screen and was widely praised for its authentic representation of Liverpool and Merseyside."

The Gathering will be available to stream on Netflix from 25 August.
