Sheridan Smith's real-life drama I Fought the Law has confirmed a release window for this autumn.

Coming to ITV later this year, the series is inspired by Ann Ming's legal battle in the aftermath of the murder of her daughter Julie.

Smith plays Ann, a woman campaigning to abolish the UK's Double Jeopardy Law after Julie's killer was wrongfully acquitted and later confessed to the crime.

The series also stars Daniel York Loh as Ann's husband Charlie and Victoria Wyant as Julie.

Inspired by the book For The Love of Julie written by Ming, who acted as a consultant on the show, the series has also released some first-look images, showing Smith as Ming in different phases of her quest for justice.

Ming also said it was "wonderful" to have Smith playing her in the series.

"I'm overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful," she said.

For her part, the actor said: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the Double Jeopardy Law to be changed.

She added: "She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

I Fought the Law airs on ITV and streams on ITVX this autumn.
