Ant and Dec's "nostalgic" coming-of-age drama Byker Grove has landed a new free streaming home in the UK.

First airing on BBC One in 1989, the TV show launched the careers of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! presenters Ant and Dec, who played characters PJ and Duncan, respectively.

Set in the Byker area of Newcastle upon Tyne, the '90s cult classic follows the lives and relationships of a group of young people who spend their free time at the local youth club, The Grove.

The teen show was known for tackling challenging social issues with storylines that included drug addiction, homophobia and abortion.

Back in 1994, the series made history after airing the first gay kiss on UK children's TV, after characters Noddy Fishwick and Gary Hendrix shared a romantic moment in a cinema.

STV managing director Richard Williams said: "Just when you thought the '90s revival might have been slowing down, we’ve only gone and brought back one of the seminal TV shows of the decade.

"Byker Grove was an integral part of so many British childhoods and we’re delighted that those original viewers - now of a slightly more mature vintage - can relive all the nostalgic action on STV Player.

"And if any Gen Z viewers want to find out who really started the baggy trousers trend, look no further than Byker Grove!"

Craig Morris, managing editor of ITV Channels & ITVX, added: "We are so excited to bring this iconic coming-of-age series to ITVX, marking the first TV appearances of two ITV stalwarts. Relive all the great moments with us later this year."

In February of last year, Ant and Dec gave fans an update on the anticipated Byker Grove reboot.

"It's very, very early days, but we are developing it, looking at storylines, looking at characters, looking at the world. It can be whatever we want it to be, so there's a lot of possibilities," said Dec at the time.

Ant added: "There's some very juicy roles going in it."

Byker Grove is now streaming on STV Player.
