A Nordic crime drama has found a new streaming home in the UK.

Based on the books by Finnish novelist Leena Lehtolainen, Detective Maria Kallio premiered in the UK on Acorn TV a few years ago, but is now also available on Prime Video (in Finnish with English subtitles).

It follows our titular protagonist studying to finish a law degree, but she misses her previous job investigating murders.

Her wish is granted when she joins a team in the Helsinki suburbs, but while she's a strong detective with sharp knack for finding clues, she's got less of a handle on her personal life.

Maria finds herself torn by her handsome co-worker and another relationship, and grapples with the balance of wanting to start a family while working in a very dangerous field.

What to Read Next

The book series actually began way back in the 1990s, but it wasn't adapted for television until the early 2020s. Season 3 only premiered earlier this year in Finland, and Prime Video UK doesn't have those latest episodes yet, but there's still 20 episodes of mystery-solving to dive into.

The series has flown under the radar so far, and there aren't many reviews out there for it. On IMDB, it has an average score of 6.4, but that's only from 10 user scores.

One viewer praised it as a "solid enough series" with an enjoyable "old-fashioned" case per episode rather than one murder across a whole season, while a particularly impressed fan loved the "confused and complex" lead.

Crime drama blog The Killing Times also called Maria "your new favourite detective" and labelled the show as a "gripping Nordic noir".

For even more of a Nordic fix, Prime Video also recently added the Swedish series Bäckström, which is a bit more of a light-hearted endeavour.

Detective Maria Kallio seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed in the UK now.
