The BBC has released a first look at Marcella star Anna Friel's upcoming Liverpool-set drama Unforgivable.

Penned by Time screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and directed by Showtrial's Julia Ford, the upcoming show will explore the impact of grooming and sexual abuse on one family.

Filmed in Liverpool, the fictional drama follows the Mitchell family as they deal with the aftermath of an act of abuse, which was carried out by a member of their own family.

After serving his prison sentence, Joe (Bobby Schofield) goes to stay at an institution named St Maura's which offers him a place to live and rehabilitation following his release.

Supported by ex-nun Katherine (Anna Maxwell Martin), Joe undergoes therapy sessions to come to terms with what led him to commit abuse and to face the consequences of his actions.

Per the synopsis: "His sister, Anna (Anna Friel), is dealing with the enormous impact that Joe's crime has had on her family - her sons, Tom (Austin Haynes) and Peter (Fin McParland), and her father, Brian (David Threlfall)."

The drama will examine "the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation."

The first-look images show Friel in character as Anna, who appears to be working at a supermarket behind the checkout. Also shown in the new images are Schofield as Joe walking through a prison with guards behind him.
