The BBC has acquired new romance series Mix Tape to air later this summer.

Based on the book of the same name by former BBC Radio 4 producer Jane Sanderson, the story follows Daniel and Alison, who meet as teenagers in Sheffield in the 1980s and bond over music, with him making her a mixtape.

Decades later, both are with other people, and while Daniel is still living in Sheffield, Alison has moved all the way to Australia.

However, he sends her a friend request on Facebook and the two reconnect over the shared love of specific songs from their time together, although their virtual reunion brings up memories both good and bad, and starts to cause friction with their current partners.

The four-part show stars The Fall Guy's Teresa Palmer and Cloud Atlas' Jim Sturgess as the lead, with Bridgerton's Florence Hunt having a role too.

Mix Tape was filmed in Dublin and Sydney, and is actually premiering on Australian streaming service this week. The BBC will air it on BBC Two and stream it on iPlayer soon, but a date hasn't been announced yet.

The book was praised by both critics and fans, with Good Housekeeping magazine calling it "gorgeously written and romantic without being sentimental".

"This story gripped me from the start," one reader said, while another stated that the plot "runs beautifully from start to finish" and had them up all night reading it.
