Season 2 of a beloved British drama starring Hugh Bonneville has just been added to BBC iPlayer.

Chapter 2 of The Gold focuses on the aftermath of one of the biggest robberies in British history. Inspired by the real-life 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery (where £26 million worth gold bullion, diamonds and cash were stolen from a warehouse near Heathrow Airport), season 2 follows the protagonists after being arrested.

When the gang is taken into custody, the police realise half of the stolen gold is nowhere to be found, prompting an investigation across several territories, from the Canaries and the Caribbean to Asia and the Isle of Man.

The scope is bigger this time around. With no clear ending in sight from the real-life inspiration, The Gold season 2 gives the story its own conclusion.

Response from critics has been positive, with The Guardian describing the series as a "top quality British drama" in its four-star review.

Despite the acclaim though, it seems there won't be another season of The Gold after this one.

That was confirmed by its stars Charlotte Spencer and Emun Elliott, who play task force members Nicki Jennings and Tony Brightwell, who confirmed it was always destined to be a two season run.

"I think people don't realise that, even when I've spoken to friends and family who are like, 'Oh my god, it's got a second season?', and it's like, 'Yeah, because they only ever found half [of the gold]'," Spencer told RadioTimes.com.

"So there's, like, a whole other storyline that people don't know about which I think they're gonna like."

Elliott added: "The way [creator Neil Forsyth] writes often, because I've worked with him a couple of times, he always seems to know whether something's going to be a standalone thing, a two-parter, a three-parter."

Season one premiered in 2023 and is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critics' score of 92% out of 26 reviews.

The Gold season 2 is available on BBC iPlayer. All episodes of season 1 are available to stream on the same platform.
