London-set spy thriller The Agency has received some big new updates for its second season.

The Michael Fassbender series, which premiered last year, has just kicked off filming for season 2 in London.

It's also received a new name, going by The Agency: Central Intelligence.

The official season 2 synopsis teases that: "The Agency: Central Intelligence follows Martian (Fassbender), a CIA agent living undercover in his own life. Samia, his lover, is a political prisoner in Sudan and he will do anything to try and save her, even past the point of treachery.

"The only way out is deeper in. A knife edge Martian must walk if he is to save love, life, and his mission."

Details beyond that are thin on the ground for now, but we do know that the cast includes Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, Harriet Sansom Harris, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Andrew Brooke, India Fowler, Reza Brojerdi, Alex Reznik and Richard Gere all returning from season 1.

Writers and executive producers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth are also back on writing duties.

The first season of The Agency received a fair mix of reviews from critics, sitting at a 67% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 41 reviews.

The reviewers who enjoyed the show called it "impeccably controlled in its tone" (The Australian), "chilly, complex and utterly engrossing" (iNews), and providing "edge-of-the-seat thrills" (The Hindu).

Earlier this year, Fassbender revealed that he actually put Daniel Craig's name forward for the part of James Bond, which he obviously ended up winning.

"I met with Barbara Broccoli just you know through passing and I actually went into an audition phase before Daniel [Craig] was cast, but I don't think I was ever in the mix," he said.

"But I remember going into that room and meeting with her and [Michael G] Wilson and I think I was like, 'Daniel Craig is…' I don't know why I was promoting him. I should have been promoting myself."

The Agency: Central Intelligence season 1 can be streamed on Paramount+ now. Season 2 is in production.
