BBC murder mystery drama Shetland will return to screens later this year with another instalment - as filming on season 10 is officially under way.

Ashley Jensen will reprise her role as DI Ruth Calder, alongside Alison O'Donnell's DI 'Tosh' MacIntosh for another six-part series, once again filmed on location in Scotland and the Shetland Isles.

To mark the start of filming, the two actors posed for a photo alongside a clapperboard that reads "Shetland 10". The broadcaster also shared exciting details of new cast members joining the upcoming season, including stars from Amandaland, Vera and Line of Duty.

Gavin and Stacey actor Samuel Anderson, who most recently appeared in Amandaland has a recurring role as new Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake, while new guest stars include The Witcher and Game of Thrones' Clive Russell, Greg McHugh (Fresh Meat) and Ellie Haddington (Motherland).

Niall MacGregor, best known for playing Richard Akers in the second season of Line of Duty will also appear, while viewers may also recognise Stephen McMillan of Boiling Point fame, who recently appeared in Netflix's Toxic Town.

The new season of Shetland - based on the bestselling crime novels by Ann Cleeves - will centre on the sinister killing of an elderly woman in the isolated hamlet of Lunniswick, with Calder and Tosh on the case.

"The team discover that the body of the retired social worker has been out in the elements for a number of days," teases the official show synopsis.

"The case will see Tosh and Calder excavate the victim’s life, past and present, as well as the lives of those who knew her. They soon begin to uncover dark secrets and terrible deeds at the heart of this closeknit community."

Reprising their roles alongside Jensen and O'Donnell are Steven Robertson (aka DC Sandy Wilson), Lewis Howden (Sgt Billy McCabe), Anne Kidd (pathologist Cora McLean), Angus Miller (Donnie, Tosh’s partner), Conor McCarry (PC Alex Grant) and Eubha Akilade (PC Lorna Burns).

Filming on season 10 of Shetland will continue over the next few months with the BBC promising a return to screens later this year.

Shetland seasons 1-9 are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer. Season 10 will air on BBC One later this year.
