A contestant on a new ITV gameshow was rushed to hospital after a "freak accident" on set.

99 to Beat is due to premiere this weekend, and sees 100 contestants face off in a series of distinctive challenges, with the last person standing winning £25,000.

However, Ryan Thomas – who hosts the show with brother Adam – has revealed that one participant was forced to withdraw after an accident while filming.

"One girl twisted her ankle just while celebrating," he said (via OK!). "It was so unfortunate because it took her out of the competition, and she must have been devastated.

"But freak accidents happen in life, and it is such a shame – the show must go on."

He added: "The beauty of this game is that anyone can play it – whether you're an 18-year-old guy or an 80-year-old woman."

A spokesperson for 99 to Beat said in a statement: “Contributor welfare remains our top priority, and this production was assessed and monitored in line with our robust health and safety processes and in consultation with external health and safety advisors.”

The brothers recently sat down with Digital Spy to speak about the series, Adam calling it "one of the most bonkers shows that we've ever seen".

"A lot of people are comparing it to Squid Game," he added. "Obviously no-one dies in it, thank God! (Laughs.)

"It's just a great, 'family fun' game show. I don't think there has been anything out there like this. I do feel like it's a perfect game show, because not only can families watch it at home together, they can also play along at home with the show as well."

Speaking of some of the contestants, Adam said: "I think the oldest contestant was in his 70s! The age range was from 18 upwards. It doesn't matter what you're necessarily good at. You just don't know what games are going to be coming next.

"Then also, to throw a spanner in the works, you've also got a team game as well. So that throws in a different dynamic to the show completely."

99 to Beat launches on Saturday (March 22) at 6pm on ITV1.
