Romesh Ranganathan took on a surprise role away from the small screen this week as he tried his hand at baking.

The comedian, who created and stars in sitcom Avoidance, had a shift behind the counter at Coughlans Bakery in Dorking, with the star previously collaborating with the chain to design a vegan treat.

Romesh, who later moved onto a bakery in his hometown of Crawley, said of the venture (via BBC Radio Surrey): “It was nice to meet people. I just wanted to get involved. The crowds are better than my tour show. I’m loving it.”

“It was slightly awkward, because people have got their phones out. A lot of them are here just to get stuff, but I don’t want them to be embarrassed if they want a photo. The difficult one is if [I] ask them if they want a photo and they say ‘no’.

“We’ve been working on this new thing. It’s this chocolate, cookie dough croissant. I’m not going to lie to you - it’s not healthy food. It’s in development right now but it’s coming soon. I don’t want to overstate it, but I think it’s going to change baking forever. It’s going to revolutionise the industry.”
