The Split boss Abi Morgan's BBC period drama Birdsong has just been added to Netflix (December 31).

The two-part series first aired on BBC One in January 2012, and stars The Day of the Jackal's Eddie Redmayne and Downton Abbey's Matthew Goode.

Based on Sebastian Faulks's 1993 novel of the same name, the adaptation spans the decade of World War I, telling the story of young Englishman Stephen Wraysford.

The plot is told in a series of flashbacks that feature memories of Stephen's affair with Isabelle Azaire (Clémence Poésy), a young married woman who he met in 1910 in Amiens, Northern France.

Birdsong also starred Bodyguard's Richard Madden, as well as Clara Grebot, Anthony Andrews, Marie-Josée Croze, Laurent Lafitte, Thomas Turgoose and George MacKay.

Speaking to the BBC, Redmayne previously opened up about the show's unique presentation of "love" and its various forms.

"For me, Birdsong is a piece that doesn't just analyse carnal love, but all types of love; whether it's sexual love, passionate love or emotional love," he said.

"I just hope that in some ways we do justice to a lot of people's favourite book. I also hope we manage to create a complexity of characters who are real and that we somehow get an insight into really quite how extraordinarily complicated this war was."

Birdsong is now available to stream on Netflix.
