Millie Bobby Brown is back on the case in Enola Holmes 3, which is already the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide. The third movie sees Enola attempt to solve the kidnapping of her brother Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), while also dealing with the small matter of marrying Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).
The first two movies were major successes for Netflix, so we'll have to wait and see whether Enola Holmes 3 proves to have the same draw after a few years away. The early signs are promising that it has and there are 10 novels in Nancy Springer's The Enola Holmes Mysteries series (and one short story), so there's plenty of source material to draw from.
But will Enola Holmes 4 happen on Netflix? Here's all we know so far, including whether Enola Holmes 3 sets it up.
Enola Holmes 3 ending explained: Who kidnapped Sherlock?
It'll be no surprise to any Sherlock Holmes fan that it was Moriarty (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) who kidnapped Sherlock and Tewkesbury's mother (Hattie Morahan). As ever with Moriarty, it was all part of a complex plot to both get rich and also punish people she believes deserve it.
Moriarty's target here was the British government, specifically Tewkesbury's father and Brigadier Sampson (Jason Watkins), who stole gold from Afghanistan during a battle at Khost, framing their Maltese allies for sinking the ship that the gold was being transported on.
It was actually hidden in a cave on Malta by Tewkesbury's father, but that didn't stop the Maltese soldiers from being arrested. Moriarty knew of this cover-up and as well as exposing it, she was keen to profit from the gold herself. However, she had no idea where it was.
What to Read Next
Enter Enola Holmes. Moriarty knew of Tewkesbury's family link to the gold, so she kidnapped Sherlock and then Tewkesbury's mother to draw Enola into the case, knowing that she'd bring in Tewkesbury for help which, eventually, would lead to Brigadier Sampson and the gold's location.
As ever though, Moriarty's plan was foiled by Enola. She did get one thing though as the Brigadier and other army officials involved in the theft are arrested, while the Maltese soldiers are cleared of any charges and the gold is returned to Afghanistan. Moriarty is arrested and sent back to England "with no chance of escape" apparently, but we'll see if that holds out.
Enola Holmes 3 ends with Enola and Tewkesbury finally getting married after Tewkesbury reveals to Enola that he's resigning his name. He'll no longer be a Lord and he'll go by his "blood name" of Earnest Tebbity-Gore, but we have a feeling Enola will continue to call him Tewkesbury instead.
Will Enola Holmes 4 happen on Netflix?
Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to confirm Enola Holmes 4, and is likely waiting to see its performance over the opening weeks to decide. If the announcement takes a while though, don't panic as the third movie was only officially confirmed two years after the release of the sequel.
It seems like the streamer won't have any trouble getting Millie Bobby Brown back on board. She produces the series and has a long-standing relationship with Netflix that extends beyond Enola Holmes and Stranger Things. In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy ahead of the third movie, she said: "I'll be there if Netflix is."
As mentioned above, there are 10 books in the book series that inspired the first movie. However, the movie series has moved away from the plots of the books, so don't expect a direct adaptation. For instance, the third book saw Dr Watson kidnapped, while Lord Tewkesbury isn't involved past the first book.
It's possible that Enola Holmes 3 could act as the finale of the movie series, with the build-up to Enola and Tewkesbury's wedding featuring a flashback montage of their time together over the series.
According to director Philip Barantini, the ending shot which pans down to the sunken ship The Wrath of Adeline 1863 is meant to leave fans questioning, "Is there going to be more to this?" with writer Jack Thorne adding: "None of these endings are full stops. All of these endings are commas as the possibilities of these characters live on."
We're sure if the movie is another hit for Netflix, it won't be the last case that Enola investigates.
All three Enola Holmes movies are available to watch now on Netflix.
