Tell Me Lies season 2 spoilers follow.

Tell Me Lies creator Meaghan Oppenheimer has hinted Tom Ellis will not return for a potential third season of the show.

The romantic thriller, which streams on Disney+ in the UK, aired its season two finale in the US this week, where Bree (Catherine Missal) and Oliver's (Ellis) affair was exposed — albeit with a major twist.

Oliver's wife Marianne (Gabriella Pession) shocked Bree by confessing she'd known about the affair all along since the couple were in an open marriage, though they had purposefully kept Bree in the dark.

With Bree and Oliver's affair now out in the open, Oppenheimer had a surprising answer when asked by Variety if former Lucifer star Tom Ellis would be back.

"I don’t think so. I think Tom was just wanting to do one season," the producer said. "I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him. I think we could bring Marianne back, maybe. There’s a lot more story to tell with her. But I think we kind of learned that Oliver is so broken and hollow by the end of this season that I’m ready for Bree to be done with him.

"One of the main reasons that I wanted to do the show in the first place is to debunk this myth that only weak or stupid women get tricked by narcissists and bad people. That only silly women get run over by love.

"It happens to the strongest of us. Some of the most incredible women I know, their one weak spot is a man or relationships. There’s something so vulnerable about that. I don’t know what it is about wanting to be loved that makes us forget ourselves."

Although US streamer Hulu has yet to officially renew Tell Me Lies for a third season, Oppenheimer and her team already have an outline of where the story could go.

The shifting timeline of Tell Me Lies moves between events in 2008 and 2015 as deeper connections between the characters are revealed.

"We’ll get more and more of the future as time goes on," the writer said. "I think by the third season, we will still have some 2008 because there’s stuff that we have to wrap up there. But I think it would be a little bit shifted in the sense that there will probably be more 2015 than 2008."

Tell Me Lies streams on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.
