BBC Three has announced a new original drama series to shoot this summer.

Thirteen is a five-part drama from Hollyoaks and Ripper Street writer Marnie Dickens.

The series follows Ivy Moxham, who escapes from the cellar that's been her prison for the last thirteen years and returns home to her family and old life.

Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three said: "I'm delighted Thirteen is coming to BBC Three, Marnie Dickens' script is compelling, a real page-turner and I'm looking forward to sharing all the plot twists and turns with the BBC Three audience."

Dickens added: "I've always been fascinated by the resilience of the human spirit in even the most extreme situations, and am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this story to life on the BBC."

Thirteen will shoot in and around Bristol, with casting to be announced in due course.

BBC Three recently confirmed that its BAFTA-winning series In The Flesh will not be returning for a third series, since the channel's budget only allows for one original drama a year.

Addressing the decision, Kavanagh explained that he is looking for "the latest and freshest ideas" and the opportunity to work with "new talent".
