Hollyoaks has confirmed how Tom Cunningham makes his return to the show next week – and it’s very unexpected.

As Ellis Hollins reprises his iconic role for a huge new plot, why does Tom find himself behind bars?

Viewers have seen villain Clare take Mercedes’ son Bobby, and the criminal teen is now staying in a caravan – believing that Clare has his best interests at heart.

Next week, Mercedes hears that there has been a sighting of Bobby so sets off to find her son, while trying to convince Donny that he didn’t kill his social worker.

Clare believes that Bobby has escaped so rages at Jacob for failing to do his job, but the fugitive soon turns up and her mysterious plan is still on.

Meanwhile, Rex, who took the blame for killing Banks, waits for another visit from Ste in prison – but he gets another visitor who he wasn’t expecting.

"Donny shows up to speak to Rex," says our insider, "and he has a big proposition for him. He offers him a deal and says that if he writes a confession which links Clare to the crimes, he’ll be released from prison. Rex has a lot to think about…"

With Rex undecided, Donny reaches out to Ste and asks him to visit his ex and convince him to take the deal.

But this sets off a chain of events that results in Donny getting a call from none other than Tom, who is in prison and has some information on his former nemesis Clare.

While Tom is clearly out for revenge, it seems Clare is one step ahead. She later visits Rex and gives him a horrifying ultimatum – kill Tom in prison or she’ll sell Jacob and Bobby to some dangerous clients.

"Rex is facing a huge amount of pressure," our source teases. "He’s been tasked with carrying out a murder, but it’s hard to say no to Clare. Plus, after having tried to stop the teens being exploited, he’ll want to protect Jacob."

With time running out for Rex, he spots Tom alone in the prison yard and decides to make his move. Is Tom in huge danger?
