Nikki Sanderson has broken her silence on a rumoured Coronation Street return following her exit from Hollyoaks as Maxine Minniver.

In today's episode, Hollyoaks confirmed Maxine's fate following a cliffhanger that saw Grace tell Maxine's ex-lover Dodger to shoot her.

Dodger appeared to shoot Maxine, but it was later revealed she was wearing a bulletproof vest and was leaving the village with Minnie to start a new life.

Opening up about her plans for the future, Sanderson, who starred as Corrie's Candice Stowe between 1999 to 2005, said she would "never say never" to returning to the cobbles.

"As I always say, never say never. I had the most incredible time at Coronation Street and absolutely adored my character Candice. She was another force of nature and incredible to play."

She continued: "I also had the most incredible time at Hollyoaks. I'm very blessed that I've been able to play two really fantastic characters in two incredible soaps.

"If I'm asked whether I'd ever go back to a soap, the answer is of course I would, if the right opportunity and storyline came up, then it’s a never say never situation."

On leaving Hollyoaks, Sanderson said she was "distraught" and "devastated" to make the "difficult decision", adding: "My reasons for leaving is I think it gets to a certain point where there's only so much that your character can do."

Opening up about her last day on Hollyoaks, Sanderson said: "It was definitely emotional. I shed many tears. Also I don’t know how to describe it. It was a bit weird. You know it's your last day but it didn’t feel real, it was an out of body kind of experience, you’re there but you’re not there.

"You know you’ll be crying all day, saying bye to everybody will be heartbreaking but also know you’ll see people again, because you don’t completely cut off from people."

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
