Romeo Nightingale has a dark new storyline ahead of his exit from Hollyoaks.

The heartthrob is currently behind bars, after confessing earlier this year that he accidentally killed former girlfriend Rayne Royce during their final showdown.

In upcoming scenes, Romeo will be drawn into the danger of his father James Nightingale trying to cover up the truth about Ella Richardson's death.

Viewers know that Ste Hay was responsible for accidentally running down Ella while rushing to get his daughter Leah to hospital, but James has pinned the crime on drug dealer Kane.

Romeo has no idea what his father has got him into, as he will be most concerned about trying to repair his romance with Peri Lomax.

After some advice from Yazz, James arranges for Peri to visit with Romeo even though she warns the lawyer his son is better off without him.

During their emotional prison meeting, Peri assures Romeo that she's not splitting up with him and will wait for him on the outside.

However, Romeo doesn't have long to celebrate the good news before his cellmate suddenly has an overdose and the dangerous Kane is moved in as his new roommate.

Kane acts friendly to get close to Romeo, all the while digging for damaging information about James. Once the prison guards are distracted, Kane reveals what he's really been up to.

The situation grows even more dire when Kane pulls out a weapon — and there are no guards around to intervene.

"Walking away from Hollyoaks is a really sad thing to do,” Warner said in a statement. “I’d always say to the producer that if possible, I would love for the door to be left open, but you never know what could happen. Could always do a Lazarus if he does get killed off.

“It’s going to be sad to walk away because they are really lovely loyal fans. Romeo’s been through so much, with the loss of his sister, all the stuff before that, a girlfriend who’s abusive and then her death, and it all just got so much so he just needed to get out to be honest.”

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
