Scheming John thinks he's off the hook for his accidental killing when he pins it on a deceased patient, but not everyone accepts this version of events…

"Every time the net closes in, John manages to wriggle his way out of it," begins our Emmerdale insider.

"His latest effort to deflect suspicion ends up backfiring, and there's a real chance John could finally be caught out – and no-one will be more pleased than Robert. That's if he doesn't become John's next victim, of course…"

In upcoming scenes, John seizes an opportunity to get away with murder after he runs into Owen, the sleazy guy who tried to spike Robert.

Turns out Owen is a patient of Liam Cavanagh's, who called at the surgery to renew a repeat prescription, but got thrown out when John recognised him. Liam later had a request for a home visit from unwell Owen, but got no answer when he called round.

Concerned something may have happened, Liam returns to the house and still gets no response, so he calls the police. Forcing entry, the cops discover Owen is dead, and he's left something very interesting behind…

"Owen has left a suicide note on his laptop in which he also confesses to killing Nate," our insider says.

"Liam is utterly shocked, but has no idea the note is a fake – John was behind it, making it appear Owen was responsible for Nate's death to take the heat off him. But was John also to blame for Owen's demise?"

News of Owen's sudden death and supposed 'confession' soon spreads around the community, and the police reveal more details about their gruesome discovery to Nate's grieving family.

Owen's note explains he had an altercation with Nate which ended in violence and his accidental death.

However, Robert is reeling from the revelations about Owen, and is relieved to have escaped from their encounter with his life.

As the news about Nate sinks in, Robert is struck by the coincidence of the man who drugged him also being behind the murder of a much-loved local.

John may have saved his half-brother from his doomed date, but it feels a little convenient that Owen should show up again and for this all to unfold a few days later. Robert wonders whether there's more to John's part in this sinister situation than meets the eye?

"Robert goes to the surgery to find out more about Owen, and Claudette lets slip John was the one who initially responded to the callout for the home visit," reveals our source. "Wouldn't you know it, Owen was then found dead shortly after.

"Smelling something fishy, Robert digs into Owen's background. Tracking down his brother Steve, Robert finds out Owen has an alibi for the day Nate was killed. That means Owen can't have killed Nate – so Robert wonders who did."

Resolute Robert heads straight to the police station, claiming he has new information about Nate's murder. Is Robert about to uncover John's lies?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
