Show bosses had announced Ross's return last month, but the exact timing and storyline details were kept under wraps until transmission.
Ross's reappearance tied in with Billy Fletcher's new storyline focusing on illegal fighting.

Billy has started taking part in unlicensed boxing matches to make some quick cash for his family, who are struggling financially amid the pressures of baby Evan's illness.
In Monday's visit to the village, Aaron Dingle put pressure on Mackenzie Boyd to stop Billy from fighting before something went seriously wrong.
Although Mack tried his best to convince Billy to pull out, the personal trainer remained adamant that he needed the money.
Later, Billy arrived for the event and was alarmed as ruthless newcomer Jade confirmed the dangerous rules of the fight, which would be a bare-knuckle match.

Billy was worried to realise that Aaron's concerns about the violent showdown were well-founded, but it seemed too late to back out now.
Things only got worse when a smug and fearsome Ross was unveiled as Billy's mystery opponent, much to the shock of Mack. Who'll come out on top when the two men go head-to-head?
Speaking recently about his return, Michael Parr commented: "I'm over the moon to be returning to Emmerdale. Ross is a character I'm extremely fond of and I'm excited to explore what he's been up to over the past five years.
"After seeing the scripts, I can't wait for the audience to see what's in store. One thing I can say is Ross's return will no doubt create fireworks."
