Emmerdale airs upset for Leyla as Liam asks for a divorce

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale aired an emotional episode for Leyla and Liam Cavanagh as Liam officially asked his soon-to-be ex-wife for a divorce.

Leyla and Liam's split was confirmed earlier in the week after a year full of traumatic events. They tried to patch things up but their reunion didn't work out and they both decided to split up for good.

However, while the decision was a mutual one, Sunday's episode proved emotional for Leyla as Liam officially asked for a divorce. This proved to be too much for Leyla, who was upset at how quickly the break-up was moving and was alarmed that Liam so quickly wanted such a clean break.

Liam and Leyla spoke to Bernice, who Liam previously kissed. Liam told Bernice of their split and said: "it was a mutual decision." Leyla clearly looked upset – even uncomfortable – at that line but she agreed: "Some things just aren't meant to be."

The two shared a joke and a smile as Bernice left, but there was clearly tension between them.

"It's good to see you smiling again. Just try and give yourself a break every now and again, eh?" Liam said. Leyla then left.

Later in the episode, Leyla moved out of Liam’s house and told him she was done packing up her things. Liam joked about their “conscious uncoupling.” Leyla turned to leave before Liam said: “Actually, I’m glad we’ve had a chance to have a bit of a chat about us, I mean.”

"We’ve both had so much heartache in both our lives. We deserve some happiness,” Liam said. “And that’s why I think it might be time for us to make a new start.”

Leyla smiled for a moment and seemed to think that Liam was going to ask her to give their relationship another shot. However, Liam then delivered the killer blow and suggested to Leyla that the new start be filing for a divorce.

"I just think we need a clean break. Otherwise, we’ll never be able to move forward," Liam said. Leyla was upset, however, and went to storm out before Liam asked her if she was on board. Leyla said she was on board “100%.”

Liam tried to talk about visiting a solicitor but Leyla leaves abruptly. Leyla walked away from the house with a final glance and that was the end of Leyla and Liam’s painful story this week.
