Emmerdale has aired another upsetting twist for Tracy Metcalfe and Vanessa Woodfield as the police reveal that they've decided to close the investigation into the factory fire.

While viewers are aware that Kerry and Amy Wyatt inadvertently set the fire that led to Frank Clayton's death earlier this month, blame for the incident was soon shifted onto Frank himself after Kerry (Laura Norton) pointed the finger his way.

And while the rest of the villagers quickly believed Kerry's story and agreed that Frank was to blame, only Tracy (Amy Walsh) is speaking out in defence of her dad after he saved her during the fire – and tonight's (August 15) ruling that Frank was the arsonist delivered a new blow to an already devastated Tracy.

"But, you'll keep looking will you?" Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) asked DI Goldberg when he told them the news.

"We've officially closed the investigation," the detective affirmed. "I presume you want your father's body releasing to you?"

"Oh no no, just chuck him in the skip, it's fine," Tracy shot back. "Of course we want him back!"

Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) also confirmed that he'd been told they were closing the investigation when he caught Kerry listening into Tracy and Vanessa's conversation, as well as revealing that they'd found an engagement ring in the factory too.

"They're satisfied it was Frank," Jai said. "It's a shame for them two. I don't suppose you left an engagement ring up there, did you? They brought back some of the stuff that they took and that was one of the things that they found. Weird eh?"

But while it looks like Jai's suspicions over the cause of the fire have only been piqued, this new twist means that Kerry appears to be off the hook for now.

But with daughter Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) still in turmoil over their actions and her mother's deflection, will the truth about the fire come out sooner rather than later?

Tracy actress Amy Walsh previously explained that the soap is lining up a huge new storyline for her character in the wake of the fire as she's determined to clear her dad's name.

"Tracy is absolutely broken in the aftermath of this," Amy said earlier this month. "She's completely in turmoil and driven to prove that Frank has nothing to do with why the fire started.

"So it's a massive storyline for her, with the fallout of it all and clearing his name. She 100% believes that it's not him and not his fault."

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
