EastEnders spoilers follow for Monday’s episode (8 September), which is available to watch now on streaming service BBC iPlayer and hasn’t yet aired on TV.

EastEnders has confirmed Max Branning’s mysterious next move, after his surprise return to the show.

In last week’s dramatic episodes, Zoe Slater returned to Walford and was accidentally shot when Jack Branning and Ravi Gulati’s fight went horribly wrong.

Fans were stunned when it was revealed that Zoe was secretly linked to Max, with the pair meeting by chance earlier this year and forming a romantic connection.

Zoe was on a quest to find her adopted son, who she gave birth to back in 2006. Max gave her money to pay Greg, an old neighbour of her son’s foster parents, in the hope of getting useful information about him.

However, things went seriously wrong, and Zoe left Greg for dead after he turned violent – and she raged at Max when he refused to get caught up in her mess.

After the shooting, Zoe urged Max to stop contacting her and urged him not to come to Walford, but he didn’t seem keen to follow her orders.

In today’s episode, the day after Zoe was shot, Kat remained by her estranged daughter’s bedside, but things were still very tense between the pair.

Alfie arrived to play peacemaker, and he gave Zoe an old phone to use after her device ended up smashed the previous evening.

Kat and Alfie encouraged Zoe to tell them about the ‘enemy’ she had previously mentioned. The police then brought news that the shooting was thought to be gang-related and that she wasn’t the intended target.

As Kat and Zoe continued to argue, Alfie encouraged his wife to take a softer approach in attempting to get through to her daughter.

But once alone, Zoe put her SIM card into the new phone – and a text from Max came through, saying, "I need to talk to you".

Zoe quickly deleted the message, but will Max continue trying to get in touch with her? And what does he want?

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
