EastEnders spoilers follow from Wednesday's episode, which is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. This article contains storyline details that some viewers may prefer to avoid, as this episode hasn't yet aired on TV.

EastEnders has hinted that Lauren Branning could be released without charge following her shock arrest.

Lauren is still in police custody after being framed for drugs smuggling, but Wednesday's episode saw her cousin Penny boldly try to clear her name.

Earlier this week, Penny planted a huge supply of drugs in Lauren's bag when they were travelling on a flight from Paris to London together.

Lauren was oblivious to what had happened, until she caught the attention of a police sniffer dog at the airport upon her return to the UK. She was immediately arrested, which meant being separated from her young son Louie.

In the latest visit to the Square, which is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer, Penny caught up with Lauren's ex-boyfriend Peter Beale at the Queen Vic.

Penny was still feigning ignorance over how Lauren ended up with the drugs, but Peter quickly realised there were inconsistencies in her story and urged her to be more honest with him.

Later, Peter vented to his father Ian about the situation and revealed that he'd given Penny an ultimatum.

Peter explained: "The drugs Lauren got stopped with – they were [Penny's], dad. I've told her she has to hand herself in, and if she doesn't, then I will."

Penny clearly took the warning seriously, especially as it followed furious disapproval from her father Jack over the way she'd behaved.

At the police station, Penny protested Lauren's innocence and confessed that she was the guilty party. Has she done enough to get Lauren out of trouble, and what does this mean for her own future?
