Mel Owen's plot for revenge against Ray Kelly in EastEnders was thrown into chaos in Friday's episode when she discovered a horrifying secret from his past.

Viewers know that Mel (Tamzin Outhwaite) is going to use her New Year wedding with Ray (Seán Mahon) to get even with him, by conspiring with the two other women he has been living double lives with — Maddie (Robyn Page) and Nicola (Alexandra Gilbreath).

However, some serious complications arose as the wedding day ticked closer when Maddie started having second thoughts about crossing Ray, giving his penchant for turning nasty.

When Maddie finally convinced Mel to press Nicola to find out more information about Ray's past, the two women were horrified when Nicola arrived to drop the bombshell that Ray might be a killer!

That shocking revelation shook Maddie to her core and she once again tried to back out of the plot, but after one last pep talk from Mel, both Maddie and Nicola eventually agreed to get back on board to bring Ray down.

"I'm fed up of being collateral damage," Mel told them. "It's time he gets what he deserves."

Meanwhile, Ray was up to no good by confronting Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) with an offer to buy E20 outright for Mel. Phil scoffed at the idea, but was later forced onto the back foot when Ray revealed this his sister's ex-boyfriend is gangster Aidan Maguire.

Unfortunately for Phil, Aidan had filled Ray in on the disappearances of both Luke Browning and Vincent Hubbard, so Ray forced Phil to sign over ownership of the club to Mel for £600,000.

As any long-time EastEnders watcher knows, Phil Mitchell doesn't respond well to threats, so he decked Ray and warned him to never blackmail him again.

Trouble then followed Ray back home, where he was confronted by teenager Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper). Feeling desperate after being rejected by Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), Phil's daughter got the wrong idea when Ray flattered her.

Louise then tried to kiss Ray, with the shady crook rejecting her. As the distraught teen fled, Ray was left trying to make sense of this very bad day...

EastEnders continues on Monday (December 31) at 8pm on BBC One as the fateful wedding nears.
