Coronation Street set up a devastating new storyline for Abi Webster tonight, as viewers saw black mould growing in her flat. Unbeknownst to Abi, the mould has been affecting her young son Alfie, with the situation set to escalate this week.

In tonight's episode, the frustrated mechanic left a ninth voicemail for her landlord, after struggling to get hold of them for the last two weeks. She complained about the damp in the flat and a "weird smell" that is "getting stronger by the day".

After threatening to take matters further, Abi told Leanne Battersby that she doesn't even know the landlord's name. She explained that the damp is coming from a leak in the gully that needs properly fixing.

Meanwhile, Leanne was facing her own frustration with her new flame Idris Nazir after finding out he put her phone on silent, causing her to miss a visit with Sam Blakeman. Idris sent her a huge bouquet of flowers as an apology before turning up to Speed Daal begging for a second chance.

Just as Leanne decided to forgive him, Abi entered with her phone pressed to her ear – hoping her landlord would pick up. At the same time, Idris' phone began ringing, and when he answered, Abi realised her landlord was standing right in front of her.

"It's you. It's him. You've been giving me the runaround for weeks," she fumed, amid his confusion. "You are caught red-handed. You're my scumbag landlord!"

Later, Abi returned home to tuck Alfie in with a sweet bedtime story. But as she went to say goodnight, she noticed his persistent "nasty" cough, and decided to take him to see the doctor tomorrow.

As the camera panned, viewers saw horrifying black mould right behind Alfie's bed, and in upcoming episodes the youngster is rushed to A&E after struggling to breathe.

Meanwhile, Idris is shocked to find out his newly-acquired property has landed Alfie in hospital, and is determined to get some answers from the previous owner.

Later, Abi and Sally Metcalfe seek legal counsel from lawyer Adam Barlow, hell-bent on suing Idris. Will they get compensation for the terrifying incident, or will slippery Idris avoid accountability?

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
