Former Coronation Street star Adam Hussain has revealed his reasoning for leaving the role of Aadi Alahan.

Aadi recently left the cobbles to start a new life in India after struggling with the pressure of Lauren Bolton accidentally downing his spiked drink, as well as the stresses of running a business.

Adam announced his decision to leave back in April, with his final scenes on the ITV soap airing on Tuesday as he bid a touching farewell to Weatherfield and his close family.

Speaking about his decision with The Mirror, Hussain said that his life had "changed for the better" since joining the ITV soap back in 2020, with the actor describing the opportunity as an "honour".

"I joined during the COVID pandemic, which was a weird and surreal time to take on a new character. I’ve loved playing Aadi, I have made good friends on the set, and I am going to miss Corrie dearly," he said.

"But I am going to be 25 in October, and I felt it was the right time to leave," he continued. "It was my decision, and the producers were so understanding. I want to spread my wings a little, go out in the big world and see what else I can do."

Despite his departure, Hussain didn't rule out a return to the cobbled streets of Weatherfield in the future, with the actor expressing relief that his character wasn't permanently killed off.

"It’s very relieving to know I can always return whenever I want to," he said. "And they [the producers] have told me the door will always be left open if I ever want to come back.

"My friends on set were gutted when I first told them, but they also understood. They now have high aspirations about what I am going to get up to in the coming years!"

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
