Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Jane Hazlegrove has revealed that there could be lots of family drama ahead for her character Bernie Winter.

Bernie has recently been getting to know her new grandson Brody, while her relationship with estranged son Kit continues to throw up new obstacles.

As the drama surrounding Bernie’s wedding to Dev also escalates next week, Jane spoke exclusively to us at Inside Soap about what’s next for her larger-than-life character…

Hi, Jane! What makes Bernie and Dev work as a couple?

"They shouldn’t work on paper, but they just do! He gets her and they make each other laugh. It’s funny because they’re complete polar opposites – he’s a big thinker and she’s incredibly impulsive, but it works."

Bernie and Kit are in a good place, are they finally a united mother and son?

"I’m not sure, you never know until you open the scripts and I’m not the sort of actor who’s upstairs all the time asking the boss what’s going to happen. I quite like the element of surprise you get in real life! I’d be surprised if it was all going to be plain sailing between Bernie and Kit, he’s a detective and she’s a bit of a rogue who’s done time… There’s a lot to negotiate and unpack with Kit, so who knows?"

She has a new grandson in her life, what does the future hold for Bernie and Brody?

"She sees Brody as somebody whose life and circumstance have dictated he’s had to go down a certain road, but there is good in him and a softness nobody else can really see. Bernie is prepared to put her neck on the line for Brody, regardless of popular opinion about him. And I don’t think she sees Brody as a replacement for Paul at all, although it would be quite easy for people to say that – as Kit already has."

What reaction do you get from the public about Bernie?

"Weirdly I don’t often get recognised, probably because I don’t have a great big yellow wig on my head and wear clothes that fit me! I feel like Bernie has become this matriarch which she’s always wanted to be and is quite happy about. She’s got Gemma, Kit, Brody, the quads, and now Asha and Aadi. Family is her prerogative for the first time in her life, because she’s stopped being so selfish."
