Coronation Street unveiled a twist in the relationship between George Shuttleworth and Eileen Grimshaw ahead of the latter's exit.
Recent months have seen the pair come to terms with the return of Eileen's half-sister Julie Carp, who reappeared in Weatherfield after a decade away to confirm that she was terminally ill.
Before Julie's death, she urged Eileen to reconsider her relationship with George, reasoning that the spark had gone. Despite persistent pressure, Eileen remained steadfast in her belief that they were good together.
Following Julie's passing, Eileen was questioned by the police as they suspected that she may have assisted her half-sister in her death, with George being caught red-handed as he attempted to embalm the body before the autopsy.

Eileen was subsequently furious with her partner as she reasoned that his actions made her look guilty of a crime. In tonight's (12 May) episode, she remarked that the "writing was on the wall" regarding her future.
After they headed to the Rovers, Eileen and George got an update from Kit Green regarding the autopsy. The policeman confirmed that Eileen's medication had been found in Julie's body. Spooked by the revelation, the pair went home.
As Eileen took her frustration out on Todd Grimshaw, he remarked that she was merely "deflecting" to escape her true grief. George, meanwhile, was getting some advice from Glenda Shuttleworth, who suggested he salvage his relationship with a big gesture.

Fresh with some newfound enthusiasm, George suggested the grandest gesture of them all – a proposal! Despite Glenda urging caution, George outlined his plans to get married abroad, much to Glenda's scepticism.
With Sue Cleaver set to depart the ITV soap in the coming weeks, it seems likely that Eileen won't take too kindly to George's romantic idea. What does the future hold for the pair? And what will the police investigation reveal?...
