Coronation Street's Roy Cropper faces an online backlash next week as he becomes the prime suspect in the Lauren Bolton case.

DS Swain starts a murder investigation as the police find worrying clues suggesting that Lauren didn't leave Weatherfield alive.

Lauren disappeared last month after being sacked by Roy at the café. Roy was the last known person to see her alive and she told him that she was ready to leave the area for a fresh start.

Next week, Bobby Crawford suggests that Sean Tully should consider renting Lauren's empty flat as Eileen Grimshaw has decided to kick him out.

Sean takes a look at the property, but is put off when he thinks he can spot blood on the curtains. Bobby and Carla Barlow take this information to the police, both worried about Lauren.

DS Swain and Craig Tinker investigate the clues and share the pair's concerns over the extent of the blood stains.

Now convinced that Roy has something to hide, Bobby tells the police about Lauren's friendship with the café boss. As Roy cleaned up the mess in Lauren's flat after she'd left, Bobby also raises this point and suggests that he could have been covering his tracks.

DS Swain is intrigued and calls at the café to question Roy. She later gives a radio interview about Lauren's disappearance, which whips up public attention on the case.

Later in the week, Carla discovers that Roy is being trolled online by internet sleuths who believe that he's guilty of murder.

Carla reluctantly shows Roy the horrible comments, believing that he needs to know what he's up against.

Roy takes some advice from Carla and his niece Nina Lucas, who warn him not to get involved in any further appeals over Lauren's case as it could spark further unwanted attention.

As various clues continue to point in Roy's direction, Swain decides to arrest him on suspicion of Lauren's murder.

Roy's ordeal gets worse when a video of his arrest is posted online, leaving Carla and Nina in despair over his reputation being tarnished by the internet attention.

Vicky Myers, who plays Swain, recently told Digital Spy: "Because of [Roy's] honesty and slight vulnerability, [Swain] sees that he's almost too good to be true.

"It's quite cynical, as she's suspicious over Roy's support for Lauren and she wonders: 'Do people really genuinely go and help someone and be generous towards them like this?' It raises suspicion and it goes from there, really.

"There is evidence to support the theory. Once Swain and Tinker go to Lauren's flat, they're made aware that there's potentially some blood on the curtains.

"Scenes of Crime Officers are brought in to investigate and it's confirmed – and there's also human tissue. So it escalates into that, really."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
