Coronation Street has begun filming for Damon Hay's return, with the character set for an explosive showdown with rival Adam Barlow.

In scenes which are set to air in 2024, Sarah Barlow's affair with Damon will be revisited as the former gangster makes a violent return to the cobbles, with new set photos showing Damon holding Adam at gunpoint.

Damon was previously run out of Weatherfield by Adam back in June in a brutal revenge plot, after learning of his affair with wife Sarah.

However, it seems that Damon is back to settle the score and get revenge on his former love rival once and for all.

In the images Damon (played by Ciarán Griffiths) can be seen holding a gun to Adam's (Sam Robertson) head in an abandoned industrial area.

Damon is surrounded by his henchmen while Adam is seen with a hood over his head, meaning it is unclear whether the lawyer is aware of his attacker's identity.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod had recently teased further details about the return of Damon alongside drug lord Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor), with the storyline kicking off in the new year.

"The story kicks off almost in the first moment of the new year. It's revisiting the unfinished business between Adam, Sarah and Damon," he told Digital Spy and other media.

"We arrive in the new year and Adam and Sarah are rubbing along okay. They're trying to amicably co-parent Harry, as per the agreement when they split up, and it's going alright.

"Then suddenly, 'wallop', Adam finds himself in this nightmarish situation all at the hands of Damon, who's unexpectedly come back," he continued.

"Damon comes back with a two-pronged plan. The first is that he wants to get his revenge on Adam. The second is that he wants Sarah back, because he feels like she's the one."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
