Coronation Street hints at new twist in Bernie lookalike story

Coronation Street's Bernie Winters lookalike plot is going to take another big twist next week.

The storyline has seen Bernie impersonate the similarly-looking Fern at a speed awareness course, and has promised to do other jobs for her for some extra cash.

Next week will see Bernie excited at the prospect of becoming a cleaner for a high-end agency and earning some decent money, but Fern tells her that the agency is dodgy and she shouldn't take the job.

But Fern starts to exhibit some worrying behaviour when she sends Bernie to pick up a takeaway and, left alone, swipes one of Bernie's tops and a bank statement and does a runner.

Bernie comes back to find Fern has gone and expresses concern, but daughter Gemma isn't helpful, stating that she doesn't believe Fern exists and that her mum is far too old for an imaginary friend.

Fern is being played by former Brookside actress Gabrielle Glaister, and the storyline was something that Bernie actress Jane Hazlegrove suggested, as the pair have constantly been confused for each other.

"Jane and I have been mistaken for each other for years and years. Me constantly denying that I was in Casualty, Jane insisting that she wasn't in Brookside," Glaister said.

"When they approached me with the storyline, it seemed like fate! What they've written is so clever and I'm having a ball working with Jane."
